Smash Solitary Campaign
Typography | Collateral
Smash Solitary is a campaign advocating for solitary confinement reform. Solitary confinement is often referred to as “the box,” which is often used for punishment or protection but frequently leads to psychological impacts. The poster, film giveaway, and postcard are used to promote a showing of the documentary film “Smash Solitary.”
Priority was placed on the research and understanding of solitary confinement, as well as the commonly used rhetoric around it. Sketch, roughs, and digital comps were part of the process to finalize the visuals, as well as the title for the campaign.
Typography
The Smash Solitary typography was costume-made to mimic the shattering dust-like element breaking out of the box. The vibrant orange serves as the only saturated color in the campaign and was chosen as a call-back to the orange jumpsuits often used in prisons across the U.S.
Film Giveaway
Each attendee receives a giveaway containing the film in a unique case. The purpose of the film is to raise awareness of the impact solitary confinement can have on inmates’ mental health. By providing attendees with a take-home DVD, it can be something they share with others to widen the reach of this film.
