The redesign of 1984 was intended to contrast current editions of the novel. Most are dark and dingy, whereas the redesign is stark and empty. The cover imagery represents the loss of self the main character goes through in the story. The thick chapter headings paired with the serif body copy throughout the interior demonstrates the domination of the government over the masses.
